Before a congregation of about 1100 people gathered at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bishop René reflected on becoming part of a living story of faith in the Sandhurst Diocese, stretching back more than 150 years.
“Today I bring my story into the story of this diocese, a story that has been unfolding for more than 150 years,” he said.
Having previously ministered in the diocese, Bishop René said he had already witnessed the faith, generosity and resilience of its communities.
“Much has been done and much continues to be done,” he said.
“I come with gratitude for what I have inherited and with respect for those who have carried the church’s mission through changing and sometimes difficult circumstances.”
Rather than outlining a strategic plan for his ministry, Bishop René called for the diocese to determine its future collectively through prayer and by listening to the Holy Spirit.
“Together, I hope we can build upon these foundations and become ever more deeply centred on Jesus Christ,” he said.
He said renewal would mean building up parishes as welcoming places where families would find support, young people were nurtured in their faith and every person was encouraged to offer their own gifts in service to others.
Bishop René made a direct appeal to people right across the diocese, urging each of them to take an active part in shaping what lies ahead.
“I ask you to share in this vision: a diocese led by the Holy Spirit, centred on Christ, committed to evangelisation and strengthened by prayerful and courageous leadership,” he said.
As he steps into his role as Bishop of Sandhurst, Bishop René has made a heartfelt request of the diocese — asking for its prayers, patience and honest engagement as he walks alongside its communities in the journey ahead.
