The steering committee is finalising its application for funding via the Federal Government's Sustainable Communities Program, with pledges of support from the community - particularly financial support - likely to increase its chances of success.
If the grant is awarded, the Southern Riverina CUC hubs will be open for operation for the start of the 2027 education year.
Steering committee chair Leanne Small said a local CUC will greatly improve educational resources within the community, and assist to keep skilled workers in the region.
“The establishment of a Southern Riverina CUC is heavily supported by both the Edward River Council and Berrigan Shire Council, with both councils having representation on the steering committee and including a local CUC as a priority in their strategic plans,” she said.
Mrs Small said the CUC proposal has already received significant industry, business and community support, and from schools across the district, and more would demonstrate the community’s desire.
Established in 2013, there are currently 28 CUC’s across 41 communities that have assisted nearly 13,000 students to further their education while remaining in their community.
These CUC hubs provide various services to help students succeed including study support and advice, academic support ranging from essay writing and referencing workshops to one-on-one sessions with dedicated student service staff, functional study spaces, access to technology and more.
Further to this, each CUC hub has access to more than 170 education providers across more than 1600 areas of study.
As part of the Sustainable Communities Program, the Federal Government will pledge $3 for every $1 the committee raises for support the establishment of the lol CUC.
