The clinic, which will operate monthly, is the result of a partnership between the local hospital and Northern Health, through the North Metro and Mitchell Local Health Service Network.
Outside of servicing Seymour residents, it will also be of use to people from lower Strathbogie Shire and parts of Murrindindi Shire.
Seymour Health Clinical Services director Anne Daley said her own personal experiences accessing paediatric specialists made clear the importance of having a local clinic.
“When my daughter was growing up, we needed paediatric services and I had to travel to Melbourne once a month,” Ms Daley said.
“If there’s something locally, it’s a lot easier for people — parents are juggling all sorts of things these days.”
She said it could be difficult for regional patients to access paediatric care.
“This opportunity is fantastic to us because (it can be) really difficult to get (paediatric) appointments, then sometimes you have to travel for miles or have to wait for ages,” Ms Daley said.
“It’s great for our local community to be able to have this.”
The idea to bring the service to Seymour sprouted after Northern Health looked at the catchment area of its referrals and found the demand was high in the region.
In its early days, the clinic will be open from two rooms at Seymour Health, and, depending on need, may expand in the future.
“If the demand is there, I suppose they’ll look at extending that,” Ms Daley said.
“We’re always looking for opportunities to increase our consultancy here because, for our local community, it’s so important not to have to travel to Melbourne.”
The clinic will be a public service covered by Medicare.
Seymour Health will officially launch the new service on Friday, November 6.
