Levee barrier training under way as stage one nears completion

As stage one of the Northern Numurkah Levee Project nears practical completion, Moira Shire Council staff will undertake training on the levee’s flood barriers.

The training forms an important part of emergency preparedness, helping ensure staff are ready to rapidly deploy the barrier system during a flood event.

By testing procedures, equipment and response times, the exercise will support effective operation of the levee and strengthen community preparedness for future flood risks.

Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said the training marked an important milestone for the project.

“Training will ensure council staff are prepared to operate the flood barriers effectively when needed and help protect our community during future flood events,” Dr Emonson said.

“We thank the Numurkah residents for their patience and co-operation throughout the construction of the levee and look forward to seeing the completed project.”

The northern levee is the first stage of a broader initiative designed to improve flood resilience in Numurkah, extending 3.12km from the Goulburn Valley Hwy to Kinnairds Rd.

The project has included significant earthworks, infrastructure upgrades and the construction of flood protection assets across several locations throughout the town.

Council is currently planning stage two of the broader Numurkah Flood Mitigation Project.
