Alex Sinclair, a second-year apprentice parts technician at Haeusler’s Shepparton, is one of five finalists in the Parts Apprentice of the Year category, the only Victorian in the running for the title.
Mr Sinclair’s path to the role was anything but conventional.
The 26-year-old spent years working in restaurants and retail sales before stints as a farmhand on Victorian dairies sparked a curiosity about agriculture.
When a position came up at Haeusler’s, he took the chance.
“I only had basic machinery knowledge at that time, but it was the complete package for me,” Mr Sinclair said.
“It’s the right mix of conversations with customers, physical work, computer work and problem-solving.”
His customer service background proved a natural fit, and he was soon offered an apprenticeship.
Mr Sinclair has since emerged as one of his team’s leading parts technicians, as well as a go-to source of safety knowledge at the dealership, with 10 years as a Country Fire Service volunteer.
He said keeping customers loyal to the brand came down to consistent service.
“Their experience with Haeusler’s will shape their opinion of John Deere,” he said.
Mr Sinclair is one of 30 regional finalists named across five award categories, including Agriculture and Turf Service Technician, Construction and Forestry Service Technician, Parts Technician, Service Apprentice and Parts Apprentice.
The award, launched in 2021, recognises outstanding service and professionalism across the agriculture, turf, construction and forestry industries.
John Deere Australia and New Zealand managing director Luke Chandler said the calibre of finalists this year was among the strongest since the program began.
“What stood out this year was not only the technical expertise on display, but the clear connection between that expertise and the results being delivered to customers when it matters most,” Mr Chandler said.
Winners will be announced at a gala event in September, in Brisbane.
