The $22.4 million project will increase drinking water storage capacity by 40 per cent, supporting growth across the region and strengthening supply resilience during peak demand periods and interruptions.
Located at Goulburn Valley Water’s Shepparton Operations Centre in Florence St, the tank is one of the largest drinking water storages in Victoria. Measuring 230 metres in circumference, it is made up of 48 concrete panels, each one standing at 10 metres high and weighing 37 tonnes.
Construction required 1700 cubic metres of concrete, 90 tonnes of reinforcement steel, with the roof supported by 45 stainless-steel columns.
In a media release, Goulburn Valley Water managing director Danielle Roche said the project was an important investment in Greater Shepparton’s future.
“Every day our customers rely on us to deliver safe, reliable drinking water. This storage tank increases network flexibility and reduces the risk of customers being impacted if there is an interruption to supply,” she said.
“While the tank itself is highly visible, it represents just one part of the significant planning and investment taking place to secure water services for current and future generations.”
Before water is piped to the new tank, a series of upgrades will be completed at the Welsford St Water Treatment Plant to support its integration into the network.
