Throughout October, Benalla Rural City will host a range of free and affordable events specially designed for residents aged 60 and above.
The first week (October 1-8) of the festival invites older people to live, laugh, and learn through a diverse range of activities designed to connect, create, and celebrate.
The festival provides an opportunity for community members to try new things, meet new friends, and celebrate the valuable contributions of older residents.
Events span a wide array of interests, from history and technology to music, craft, and physical activity.
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn encouraged older people to explore the program and get involved.
"The Victorian Seniors Festival is a fantastic occasion to celebrate the seniors in our community," Cr Hearn said.
“We have put together a range of activities, so there’s something for everyone to try, whether you want to learn something new or simply catch up with others."
The first week’s highlights include:
- For those interested in history: Explore the golden age of flight at the Benalla Aviation Museum or delve into local heritage at the Benalla Costume and Kelly Museum.
- For those interested in craft: Join a Crafternoon at the Benalla Library, discover the art of patchwork at U3A, or see the handiwork of the Benalla Woodworkers Association.
- For the tech-curious: Become a Tech Savvy Senior in a dedicated session with Waminda Community House at the Benalla CWA Hall.
- For the active and mindful: Try Chair Yoga, Tai Chi in Devenish, bushwalking or anafternoon of Indoor Carpet Bowls.
- For those interested in music and movies: Enjoy a morning movie screening of "Thelma" at the Swanpool Community Cinema, listen to the strums of a ukulele or a calming musical interlude with Piano Melodies.
"This festival is more than just a series of events, it's a celebration of life and community," Cr Hearn said.
"I'm particularly excited about the variety on offer, from guided tours of our significant Aboriginal Gardens to the empowering LiveUp session.
“It’s a chance for our seniors to get involved and stay active.
“I look forward to seeing our community come together and make the most of this wonderful festival."
