The training camp is run by Basketball Victoria Country and is the first step in the development pathway for country basketballers.
Owain and Connor were two of 240 players selected from more than 1000 youngsters who tried out across the state to attend the camp.
They will be put through their paces at the four-day camp and allocated into 24 separate teams to work alongside new coaches and teammates in training sessions, matches and some 3v3.
The two boys' selection has been recognised by the Benalla Young Sportsperson Trust, with trustee Craig Carley and Kevin Challis of Benalla Commonwealth Bank on hand to offer the boys $200 each for travel expenses, with some of that earmarked from a recent $500 donation from the local bank.
“They’ve obviously shown some fantastic talent in being identified with real quality, they’ve gone through several trial processes and they’ve been identified as the best,” Mr Carley said.
“Full credit to them — they go spend four days in Echuca on a training camp, it’s only going to better their basketball skills.
“And it’s not only a great opportunity to improve their skills, but also socially, to meet new people and network.”
Both boys are multi-talented, with Owain playing tennis and football, as well as having a history in gymnastics, while Connor takes to the football field and athletics track.
And they both dedicate numerous evenings to their basketball craft, lining up in the Thursday night competition as well as Monday nights in under-16s, which Owain said was to “help our squad team improve and help with team chemistry”, while Connor also travels to Wangaratta on Tuesday nights for his basketball commitments.
Owain and Connor said they were both excited to get stuck into it when they head to the jamboree from September 21 to 24 and are grateful to the trust for helping them with their sporting endeavours.
