Benalla Gardens Tennis Club will kick off its Open Court Sessions tonight, with the 60-minute weekly program geared to revitalise long-lost tennis players in the community.
Club representative and program host Jeremie Boulanger said the sessions - created by Tennis Australia - were all about getting players back on the court by promoting fitness and fun.
“It’s only partially about traditional tennis. It’s much more about getting out of the house and having fun,” Boulanger said.
Growing up in Northern France, Boulanger now resides in Benalla and has played tennis at a high level for many years.
After receiving specialised training by Tennis Australia to run the new program, Boulanger said he was excited to get locals back into the game of tennis at the Gardens.
“The club and the community are extremely lucky to have six quality hard courts on the lake,” he said.

“An absolute bonus is we have lights on court, meaning as long as it’s not pouring, it’s all-year-round tennis for those who want it.
“Our club is in a perfect situation to consider running this program throughout most of the year.”
Boulanger said there had been misconceptions that hard courts could be high impact, but insisted this was misleading.
“In any case, this program further mitigates impact and difficulty,” he said.
With music pumping in the background, the program includes modified and shortened half-court drills, so players of all ages, fitness levels and abilities can enjoy.
Disability award nominations open
Once the session concludes, players can then kick back, have a beverage and enjoy a light meal provided by the club (vegetarian options are available upon advanced request).
Each session costs $10, with all equipment provided. BYO beer or wine, while soft drink is available to be purchased at the club.
