“It’s almost an entirely new committee, there’s been a big changeover,” new president Kirsty Renkin said.
Renkin was elected as the new president at the club’s annual AGM and said the focus this year would be getting kids back on courts.
“We’re really excited about the new season, we’re really trying to increase our numbers,” she said.
“We’ve been struggling for the last couple of years to get kids back into sport, so that’s really our emphasis.”
Renkin said the association had been on the front foot this off-season, arranging clinics and skills days for local players with assistance from state body Netball Victoria.
“We’ve been working with Netball Victoria and local components of the netball clubs to run clinics over the summer to try and generate some interest,” she said.
“We’re just about to come into squad trials which will be held this Thursday and Saturday.”
The committee would no doubt have its work cut out for it in building junior participation this year, Renkin said, as local sport continued its COVID-19 recovery.
“At the moment we’re just trying to find our feet, get organised and primarily, get some numbers back to hopefully get some more kids on those courts,” she said.
“I think all sporting codes — definitely in Benalla — are struggling for numbers, which obviously is going to have ongoing, long-term effects, so we’re also trying to get parents on board to bring their kids down.”
The club has also announced committee members Julieann Richardson as under-13 coach, Emma Sangster, who will take under-15s, while Erin Crook will take on under-11 coaching duties.
Netball squad trials will be held tomorrow, Thursday, January 27, and Saturday, January 29, with the domestic season for juniors, seniors and mixed competition to begin in early March.
