The Shepparton side is the most in-form side in the Victorian Premier League 2 currently, having gone unbeaten since the beginning of March in a club-record winning run that has placed it firmly in the premiership fixture.
After this spectacular purple patch, the boys in navy blue sit four points adrift of long-time division pacesetter Malvern City, which has lost three times out of its past five outings to blow open the championship chase.
Craig Carley’s charges also boast a game-in-hand on the ladder leader, following the postponement of their round 18 clash against Keilor Park, with a bye week coming up on the weekend of June 27.
This set of circumstances has meant that the Suns boss has been able to give his troops a well-earned rest from matters on the training field, while turning his attentions to recruiting some new insurgents.
The McEwen Reserve helmsman confirmed he had secured the services of Pigatto, who will return to the club after a stint representing Springvale White Eagles.
Stefan Pigatto has returned to the GV Suns during the transfer window.
The hope in the Suns camp will be that the fresh addition will help to bolster the squad as the club looks to secure automatic promotion during the business end to the campaign.
“Stefan moved to Melbourne at the end of last season and has since moved back,” Carley said.
“He’ll come back into the squad and he’s been training with the boys for the past couple of months now.
“Potentially, there might be a couple more incoming, I’m certainly not looking to make any drastic changes – I have full faith in the boys that have been doing the job.
“But we are a little bit thin in terms of numbers, so it’ll be a case of bolstering the squad with maybe one or two inclusions, but nothing too drastic.
“I have full faith in the boys and what they have been doing (this season) with the performances they have been producing.”
As for the opportunity to rest players until the next fixture on July 4 in week 19 of the campaign, Carley is convinced that this break can provide his side with extra ammunition in what remains of the season.
“The rest will be good for those key players, especially those who have been playing with knocks and carrying that over into games,” he said.
“So it’s a good opportunity around the mid-season mark to recharge and it’s obviously a busy period too with the transfer window open over the next 10 games.
“So it’s a chance to stabilise what we have and recharge the batteries to give it a good promotion push going into the second half of the season.”
