Mathoura crushed by Bombers

Beau Ogden was one of Mathoura’s best in a heavy defeat to Waaia.

Mathoura proved no match for league powerhouse Waaia in round five of Picola District Football League.

The Timbercutters headed to Waaia Recreation Reserve to battle the perennial grand finalist and multi-time title winner, well aware of the daunting challenge ahead.

Through one quarter, although Waaia clearly had the advantage, Mathoura would have been happy with its efforts to restrict its quality opposition, going into the first break down 31-14.

However, the Bombers really turned it on from there and kept the Cutters scoreless in the second, while kicking seven goals of their own.

The game was more or less decided by half-time, with Waaia up 65 points and, although Mathoura was able to return to the scoreboard in the third, the Bombers ran away with the fixture 23.15 (153) to 3.2 (20).

Kai Shiels slotted two of Mathoura’s majors, while Jake Rawe finished off the Cutters’ other successful move.

Mathoura is one of five sides yet to score a win in the league this season, sitting second from the bottom.

A slightly easier run of fixtures begins this Saturday, when the Timbercutters battle the 2-2 Dookie United at Mathoura Recreation Reserve.
