Tonny shoot for three, Mowers look to be spoilers in C-grade

“Going through a season undefeated is a fantastic achievement, but every season brings its own challenges, and you still have to earn it every week.

“The excitement is definitely there, particularly knowing we have the opportunity to finish another season with a premiership — three from three would be an amazing feeling and such an achievement.”

The Blues have been as dominant as ever, led particularly by their attacking end.

Hughes and fellow goaler, and recently crowned best-and-fairest, Tamara Cummins, are one and two on the league scoring charts, the Blues having drained 309 more goals than any other team.

“We’ve got experienced, accurate goalers who have been able to put up plenty of goals, but it’s certainly a team effort,” Hughes said.

“Our midcourt and defensive end work hard to create turnovers and opportunities, and that gives our attack plenty of ball to work with.

“Everyone plays their role, and I think that experience and trust across the whole team has been a big part of our success.”

At the other end of the court will be Moama, a team that has been the second best in the league, but hasn’t been able to press Tonny so far, the closest game between the sides a 15-goal margin.

The Mowers have made a strong step forward this year, improving on fifth place, and a first round finals exit last campaign to reach the final.

“Lots of experience on the court as well as talent,” coach Serren Verhey said.

“I've really liked the variety of people in the team.

“We’ve got a couple of older heads and a couple of mid-20 heads.

“(It’s) been really nice to have a diverse group of people that are all in different stages of their life, so that’s been a really great aspect.

Verhey knows her side is a heavy underdog and will require its best performance of the year to upset the Blues

“We just need to play four quarters of good netball and just keep our heads regardless of the score,” she said.

“I think when we do get down to Tonny, we just drop our bundle.

“Our goal this week is to hold our own, and whatever the result will be, still be grateful that we’re in a grand final.”

Although Tongala goes in as the favourite, Hughes isn’t taking the game lightly.

“We’re expecting them to bring plenty of pressure from the first whistle,” Hughes said.

“For us, it’s about sticking to what we’ve done well all year, and making sure we’re switched on for the full four quarters.

“We know what we’re capable of, and ultimately, we just want to enjoy it and go out there and play how we do each week.

Tongala and Moama will face off in the C-grade final from 11am at Moama Recreation Reserve.
