Hosting ladder leader Nagambie at Violet Town Recreation Reserve, the Towners were blown off the park in a 0.1 (1) to 47.18 (300) defeat, with a Lakers spearhead booting a massive haul in the process.
In an ominous start to proceedings, the Lakers kicked 8.6 (54) in the first term while keeping the Towners scoreless, but ramped things up in the second term with a 12-goal haul, again restricting the home side to a scoreless quarter, as the scoreboard read 20.10 (130) to 0.0 (0) at the main break.
The Towners would register their sole behind for the game in the third term as the situation continued to worsen for the home side, with the Lakers proving insatiable in front of goal, slamming through another 11.6 to cross the 200-point mark, leading 31.16 (202) to 0.1 (1) with a full quarter of football still to play.
Cruelly, Nagambie’s heaviest scoring term came in the final quarter, as the Lakers continued the relentless goal-fest.
The Towners had no answers to the might of Nagambie, whose players produced a stunning 16.2 (98) in the final term alone to bring up 300 on the scoreboard at the final siren, and condemning Violet Town to what is the biggest loss in the KDL this year.
Much of the damage was done off the boot of league goalkicking leader Tom Barnes, who booted 23 majors to take his tally to 81 for the season.
Sam Leigh was named Violet Town’s best in the loss, closely followed by co-captain Nathan Abley, while Michael Nolan, James Herring, Tim Ross and Angus Wood rounded out the Towners’ better performers.
The Towners sit second last on the ladder with a 1-10 record from 11 games and will look to add to the tally before the season’s end, with five games remaining in the home-and-away season.
A trip to Girgarre awaits this weekend, with the Towners no doubt desperate to restore some pride after the big defeat.
While it was a much closer affair, the Towners were also handed defeat on the netball court, with the A grade side going down to Nagambie by 23 goals.
The 28-51 defeat was Violet Town’s fifth in a row following what was a solid start to the season, ensuring it slips further from the top six despite having sat in fifth at the end of round seven with a 4-2 record.
Now possessing a 4-7 win/loss record, the Towners will look to get back on the winners’ list this Saturday when they travel to face Girgarre, the Roos one spot above the Towners in eighth and level on wins, although they have played an extra game.
