Grief has a way of reshaping the world around us, making even the brightest moments feel distant. For many, it is a journey of love and loss, where words can become both a refuge and a means of healing.

For Greek-Australian author and poet Doris Falidis-Nickolas, writing has been a source of comfort in her journey through loss. After the passing of her beloved son, Angelo, in 2022, Doris turned to poetry as a way to express her grief, love, and enduring connection to him.

Her latest poem, The Language of Us, was born from a period of deep reflection-when words felt difficult to find, yet love remained ever-present. It is a heartfelt reminder that those we cherish never truly leave us; their presence is woven into our hearts and memories forever.

Doris' poetry is featured in her book, Pimata-a moving collection of poems offering solace to those navigating grief. Pimata is available for purchase here, and more of Doris' work can be found at www.dorisfalidisnickolas.com.au.

"The end of last year carried the weight of deep difficulty, and the festive season only amplified the ache in my heart. I found myself struggling to bring words to life, as if the well of expression had run dry. Yet, out of the depths of my sorrow, and the unending love I hold for my son, a new poem has emerged - The Language of Us." "- Doris Falidis-Nickolas

The Language of Us

As I leave this world

my soul graced with love

carrying everything I need for the path ahead.

My heart, a sacred vessel

filled with the purest form of love

my life on earth

a love story untouched.

You are my all.

The reason for your longing

the reason for my peace.

Our souls fused into one

and in your heart space

I will exist.

Every story we wove

every memory we hold close

etched form the heavens

a love beyond time

beyond all else.

- Doris Falidis Nickolas
