Syd Snr, raised in a Catholic orphanage and unofficially adopted by a loving family, was a WWII veteran who returned with 92% permanent hearing loss.

While selling newspapers for Rupert Murdoch, Syd became affectionately known as 'Paper Mac' wearing 48 colourful suits.

He was also an outstanding athlete, competing in a Stawell Gift qualifying heat and was a volunteer athletic coach.

In 1948, he met Nancy—his beloved wife of nearly 64 ¾ years—with together they were champion ballroom dancers and shared a life of generosity.

Syd was an astute punter from 1950 and a licensed bookmaker from 1971 to 1990 deeply involved in horse, harness, and greyhound racing.

Together, Syd and Nancy dedicated their lives to helping the disadvantaged and underprivileged.

Beyond helping individuals, they supported the Goodwood Orphanage, countless charities, fundraisers and school scholarships.

Syd was known for his infectious smile, humility, integrity and hard work, with wife Nancy as the devoted, unsung hero.

Dad and Mum were admired and respected role models in their community.
