A club employee, who asked not to be named, had drawn attention to a potential cull and a petition was set up via change.org
By Thursday morning, June 11 it had gained 1489 signatures.
A Facebook page operated by Beechworth Wildlife Stays then posted that a protest would take place, and it was shared to various Benalla groups on the social media platform.
Hence, the protest on Thursday morning.
Benalla Golf Club, however, put out a statement confirming that no kangaroo harvest was currently under way.
“The club is seeking further advice from relevant stakeholders and experts,” the statement read.
“The club has participated in regulated kangaroo management programs for a number of years under appropriate approvals.
“These programs have never aimed to eradicate kangaroos.
“They are focused on responsible and sustainable population management, balancing animal welfare, environmental impact, course operations and safety.”
This will be good news for Victorian Kangaroo Alliance spokesperson, Mike Fuery, who was one of the protestors.
Under the impression a cull was taking place, he said lots of other golf courses co-existed with a kangaroo population, and he hoped Benalla Golf Club would do the same.
He said culling was against the recommendations of the Australian Golf Industry Council.
“I think there are lots of non-lethal solutions,” he said.
