The roadshow brings together secondary school students, local tradespeople, apprentices, employers and training and apprenticeship organisations, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with industry and learn more about careers and pathways in the trades.
NE Tracks LLEN program co-ordinator Annette Borradale said the roadshow would visit six secondary schools across Wangaratta and Benalla.
“This approach was developed in recognition that taking students off campus can be a significant barrier for schools due to transport, staffing and timetabling requirements,” she said.
“By bringing the roadshow to schools, students can access meaningful career exploration opportunities without needing to leave their school.”
A key feature of the roadshow is connecting students with local trades people and apprentices, who share authentic insights into their industries, career journeys and experiences working on the tools.
NE Tracks LLEN has partnered with lead sponsor Glenrowan Solar Farm along with AGA Into Work, GOTAFE, Head Start, Master Builders Victoria and the Tomorrow Today Foundation to provide students with practical information about employment pathways, VET, trade training, school-based apprenticeships and apprenticeships.
“North-east Victoria is a growing region, creating an ongoing need for skilled workers across a wide range of trades,” Ms Borradale said.
“The Tradies Toolbox Roadshow aims to encourage young people to consider a career in trades, while helping them understand the different pathways available and make informed decisions about their future.”
Students will have the opportunity to:
- Meet and speak directly with local tradespeople and industry professionals
- Hear real stories about career journeys and life in the trades
- Ask questions about different trades, workplaces and industries
- Learn about apprenticeships, training and education pathways
- Discover trades and career opportunities they may not have previously considered
- Connect with local employers and industry representatives, and
- Explore potential pathways into work experience, apprenticeships and future employment.
NE Tracks LLEN chief executive Tim Oliver said he was excited about the roadshows.
“These events provide opportunities for local students thinking about trade apprenticeships to discuss pathways with tradies and current apprentices about what working on the tools is like,” he said.
The GOTAFE team will also be there, sharing information about further education and training, supporting apprentices on their journey.
The first Benalla-based roadshow will take place on Thursday, August 27 at Benalla P-12 College’s Faithfull St Campus.
The second will be at the Australian Christian College, Benalla on September 16.
