On Tuesday, May 19, student leaders from Greater Shepparton Secondary College, St Anne’s College Kialla, GV Grammar, St Mary of the Angels Nathalia, Notre Dame College and Shepparton Christian College participated in the forum at La Porchetta in Shepparton.
They had the opportunity to network and meet fellow leaders from across the region, coming together to discuss common issues young people face today and how as a community, can work together to combat those issues.
The forum was run by the office of state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe. It was facilitated by youth advisor and youth community engagement officer Safa Zahir and Electorate officer Jack Norris, and was an opportunity to highlight youth voices.
“Young leaders play an important role in our community and the forum highlighted their opportunity to share their lived experiences, the challenges, and also the opportunities,” Safa said.
“It is incredibly important to understand the issues of our youth and the issues they are facing today.”
On the night, student leaders also heard from inspiring guest speakers Leading Senior Constable Leigh Johnson from Victoria Police and Jack Norris a former school captain, who shared their journey and experiences.
With more than 28 school captains and student leaders from across the region in attendance, Ms O’Keeffe said she was inspired by the strong turnout, contributions and diversity of students.
“As their local member of parliament, I want to be connected to the issues that face our youth and I will continue to listen and advocate for our youth,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
“I would like to thank and congratulate each and every leader who participated in the forum.”
