There were two students from each of the Corowa, Beechworth, Wangaratta and Benalla Lions clubs.
The Year 3/4 students participating were Luke, who attends Beechworth Primary, Patrick, from Wangaratta Primary School, Macey, from St Joseph’s Primary School, Benalla, and Isabelle, from St Mary’s Primary School, Corowa.
The winning speaker was Isabelle and the runner-up was Patrick.
The Year 5/6 students taking part were Bernice, from Benalla P12 College – Waller St Campus, Hypatia, from Cathedral College, Imogen, from Corowa Public School, and Wakana who attends Beechworth Montessori Primary School.
The impromptu question for this final was: Why is failure actually a good thing? Explain.
The winner was Hypatia and the runner-up was Imogen.
A Benalla Lions Club spokesperson said that both Isabelle and Hypatia went on to participate in the District Final held in Yarrawonga on Sunday, August 30.
“Thank you to the three judges – Leading Senior Constable Chris Di Ciero, Benalla Fire Brigade Captain Charlie Sexton and Cr Puna Gunaratne,” the spokesperson said.
At the final, held in Wangaratta, two students from each of the Cohuna, Lockington, Barooga, Corowa, and Yackandandah Lions clubs presented their speeches to an audience of 60 people.
The winning Year 3/4 student was Isabelle from Corowa, and Noah from St Anne’s Primary School in North Albury won the Year 5/6 competition.
Isabelle and Noah presented their speeches at the state final in Wangaratta on September 20, with two other students participating from Shepparton in District V5
Both Isabelle and Noah won their sections.
