At around 5.30pm on Wednesday, February 5 police received reports of an erratic driver on the Hume Fwy south of Benalla.
Witnesses described a vehicle swerving dangerously between lanes and overtaking at high speeds.
Officers from the Benalla Neighbourhood Policing Unit detected the vehicle travelling at 148km/h north of Glenrowan.
The driver was straddling both lanes, creating a serious hazard for all road users.
Upon intercepting the car, police discovered five occupants inside, including three children. Disturbingly, a young child was not properly restrained in a car seat.
The 48-year-old male driver had his licence suspended for six months and was issued penalty notices for various driving offences.
A Benalla police spokesperson said road safety was a top concern for our community, and that officers were taking action.
“Reckless driving puts lives at risk, and we remain committed to keeping our roads safe,” the spokesperson said.
If you see something concerning on the road you can report it by calling 000 or contacting a local police station.
