Owners Matt and Kate Halpin took ownership of the historic hotel in 2021 and undertook a meticulous two-year redevelopment of the premises, reopening in September 2023.
In 2025, the Vic was awarded the AHA’s best redeveloped hotel in Victoria.
Speaking after the awards ceremony last Monday, Matt said to receive an award for the second time in less than three years of operating was a surreal experience.
“As a small independent business, this kind of recognition means so much to our whole team and isn’t something we take for granted,” Matt said.
“This place is powered by a small team who cares deeply about what we do - from the kitchen to the floor, to housekeeping, to every behind-the-scenes job nobody sees.”
Held at the Palladium at Crown in Melbourne, the AHA’s State Awards for Excellence celebrates the top pubs, hotels, and venue staff across 39 award categories.
The hotel was also a finalist in the Best Hotel Accommodation category, highlighting the effort Matt and Kate have put into resurrecting the hotel and the commitment of their staff.
“We’re incredibly proud, particularly given how much care and thought our team puts into the guest experience across every stay,” Matt said.
“We’re very proud to showcase this region through what we do.”
Since its renovations, the venue has reclaimed its status as an iconic hotel in regional Victoria.
With 14 suites accommodating up to 28 people, it stands proudly on the main street of Rutherglen.
