Local volunteers from Cancer Council Victoria will be outside the Commonwealth Bank on Station St most Thursdays and Fridays, as well as at Aldi some Saturdays, in the lead-up to Daffodil Day on Thursday, August 20.
There are very few places, if any, in Australia where you can pick up a bunch of freshly picked flowers for only $5.
But thanks to the dedication of volunteers such as Seymour’s Dawn O'Rourke, Margaret Sheppard and Norma Walton, you can do just that.
Speaking to the Telegraph on their first fundraising day of the year, Ms Sheppard said she couldn’t wait to meet community members in the coming weeks and share the group’s locally grown flowers.
“All our daffodils are locally sourced. People donate them to us,” she said.
“These ladies (Ms O’Rourke and Ms Walton) went and picked them yesterday.
“And we'll be out in the street for the next six weeks depending on when daffodils are ready.”
Ms Sheppard said daffodils looked great this time of year.
“And they’ll last about 10 days, in water,” she said.
A cancer survivor herself, Ms Sheppard said the Cancer Council was a very worthy cause, and 100 per cent of what they raised would go to it for cancer research, prevention and support.
“The money we raise makes the kind of treatment I received so much more positive,” she said.
“It will really help people survive this hideous disease.”
The volunteers are unable to take a card payment, so make sure you have cash in your pocket if you pop into town in the coming weeks.
Ms Sheppard mentioned that, as they were situated just next to an ATM, even if you didn’t have cash on hand, you could always get money out.
“Seymour supports us every time we are out here, the people are just so wonderful,” she said.
“We really appreciate it.”
