Since the release of her previous single, Janelle, Kirrilee has been working behind the scenes to complete her second EP, Smile You’re On Camera.
The Shepparton-born, Melbourne-based graphic designer turned pop artist is stepping into her most vulnerable era yet with the release of her new single, Happy.
The track, due out on Friday, May 29, is anything but cheerful.
Born from a moment of heartbreak and perhaps naivety, Happy captures the grief of watching someone you love walk away from their dream.
“I’d always assumed we’d be doing music until we were 99 years old,” she said.
Kirrilee grieved both the loss of their shared future and his dream. Sitting under a tree in a park, she cried.
And then the chorus came to her.
“I wrote the chorus to Happy while I was sitting under that tree,” she said.
“I find that I write songs really well in moments like that.”
What began as a soft piano ballad evolved into a beautifully tragic, kind of intense electronic track with vulnerable lyrics about diverging paths, creative identity and the bittersweet hope that people find joy in their separate futures.
With more tracks from Kirrilee’s EP on the way, Happy marks a powerful new chapter for an artist who continues to turn raw experiences into resonant pop storytelling.
