Works to demolish Echuca’s water tower are slated to begin from June 9 and run until late November.
In 2025, Coliban Water engineers discovered critical structural defects that could endanger both nearby residents and workers below.
Following extensive discussions with community groups and government authorities, the difficult decision was reached to demolish the tower.
A Coliban Water representative said it wasn’t a decision made lightly.
“The decision to remove the tower is disappointing, as we recognise the significance of its age and history,” they said.
“However, the safety of the community and our team must be the priority.”
The delicate demolition process will span six months, with residents facing several road closures throughout this period.
In March, Coliban Water transitioned the Echuca water supply from one where water pressure was provided by elevated storage, to a direct booster pump system.
The engineering marvel, designed by the legendary Sir John Monash, required 646 tonnes of reinforced concrete and has reliably delivered water pressure from 32.9 metres above ground for over 100 years.
Echuca’s water tower was built in 1915 at a cost of £2973.

Community members have expressed their views on the news under a post by Echuca Historical Society’s Facebook page.
Creative suggestions poured in from locals — from transforming it into an eye-catching mural canvas to repurposing it as a unique visitors centre or trendy coffee shop.
Many, however, said it should be kept as a historical monument of Echuca.
“Considering the historical significance of this town and the fact the tower has links to Monash, it should be made safe and kept as a historical building,” commenter Glenis Morrison said.
Despite the community pleas, from June 9 onwards, this iconic piece of Echuca’s identity will slowly vanish from the skyline.
Road closures
June 9 to late November: Pakenham Rd between High and Hare Sts to be closed for duration of project.
High St will be closed during stages of the project, which will result in southbound traffic being reduced to one lane only.
Signage, detours and traffic management will be in place during the works.
