The winless Timbercutters kept in touch for most of the contest with fellow struggler Strathmerton, eventually falling to a 40-24 defeat.
The first term was particularly tight, the Bulldogs edging it by two goals, 10-8.
Strathmerton extended its lead over the second and went into the long break ahead 22-15.
Mathoura fought to stay in it in the third with scrappy defence, but its attack also failed to fire and the Bulldogs led by 11 at the final change, going on to a 16-goal win.
The Timbercutters got off the bottom of the table on percentage, despite a winless record, 0-10, after Blighty was crushed by a huge margin in its game.
Mathoura takes on another side nearby on the ladder, Katunga, at home this weekend.
Picola United v Dookie United
A credible Picola United outfit couldn’t keep pace with one of the league’s best, Dookie United.
The Dooks sit second on the table after downing the Blues 53-24 at Picola Recreation Reserve.
The writing was on the wall after a strong showing at both ends from the visitor in the opening term, Dookie ahead 14-6 at the first change.
Picola’s defence stepped up in the second to slow the Dooks’ ascent, but the lead still grew to 11 at half-time.
The second half brought more of the same, the visitor patiently going about its work to grind out the comfortable win.
The Blues still have a two-game buffer in eighth spot, heading into a clash away at unbeaten leader Tungamah this weekend.
