The Yarrawonga Pigeons will head into the bye with confidence building across the club, sitting at two wins and one narrow loss after a thrilling nine-point victory over Lavington on Saturday.
In a high-quality contest, the Pigeons reaffirmed their status as a genuine contender with a 15.8 (98) to 13.11 (89) win, blending experienced stars with an exciting next generation poised to carry the club forward.
Reigning Morris Medal winner Willie Wheeler was influential once again, finishing with two goals and providing drive through the midfield.
Alongside him, former Carlton Football Club forward Michael Gibbons reminded everyone of his class, dominating early with 20 disposals and playing a key role in setting up the win before being managed late.
However, it is the emergence of young talent that has added a new dimension to Yarrawonga’s premiership push. Zac Fraser continues to impress, booting three goals and showcasing the natural football ability that has Coach Williams excited about his future.
Up forward Ben Coghill added two goals in another strong performance with some impressive hands.
The Pigeons burst out of the blocks with six first-quarter goals to establish a 22-point lead, extending that advantage to 35 points midway through the second term.
But Lavington responded with a late surge before halftime and again threatened in the final quarter, cutting the margin to single digits in a dramatic finish.
Despite the Panthers’ fightback, Yarrawonga steadied when it mattered. Key moments, including a crucial mark from Wilson in the last, ensured the Pigeons held on to secure an important early-season victory.
Coach Leigh Williams said the performance showed both the strengths and areas for growth within his group.
“We controlled large parts of the game and our best footy is strong, but there are still moments we need to tidy up” Williams said.
The win was even more significant given the Pigeons have been forced to navigate injuries to key players yet continue to perform strongly across all grades.
The Pigeons have now won seven of its past nine matches across senior, reserves and thirds, underlining a resurgence built on depth and development.
Lavington coach Adam Schneider was quick to label Yarrawonga a top-tier side, noting their midfield strength and overall talent profile as among the best in the competition.
Now attention turns to a blockbuster clash following the bye, with the Pigeons set to host 2023 Grand Final rivals Wangaratta Magpies at home on the JC Lowe Oval on Saturday week.
The match looms as an early benchmark for both sides and a chance for Yarrawonga to further cement its return as a contender. With experienced leaders firing and a new generation stepping up, the Pigeons appear well placed to launch another serious tilt when they return from the break.
Reserves outrun on big stage
Lavington 4.5 5.9 12.10 13.13 (91) def Yarrawonga 1.1 2.1 3.4 4.4 (28)
After two strong opening performances, Yarrawonga’s Reserves were brought back to earth on the weekend, outclassed by a slick Lavington outfit that made full use of a wide, open ground.
The Pigeons struggled to keep the ball in tight and, at times, failed to hold goal-side positioning, allowing Lavington to stretch the play and expose them on the outside. Forced to chase for much of the day, Yarrawonga found it difficult to apply consistent defensive pressure.
Despite the result, there were several strong individual efforts. Samuel Bigger and Tom McKimmie worked tirelessly, with their run and pressure instrumental in keeping the Pigeons within reach.
Co-coach Bronson Schofield continued his impressive early-season form and is pressing strongly for senior selection, while Cooper Courtney, returning to the twos after the opening rounds in the seniors, provided a steady presence.
Ultimately, however, the Pigeons were left wanting for run and defensive intensity, particularly across the outer channels where Lavington did significant damage.
With a well-earned bye ahead, Yarrawonga will regroup before a significant test against perennial Reserves contender Wangaratta Magpies — a clash that should provide a clearer indication of where the side sits in 2026.
Best Players: Tom McKimmie, Patrick Waugh, Samuel Bigger, Bronson Schofield, Lachlan Craig, Cooper Courtney
Thirds stay perfect with gritty win
Lavington 1.3 4.4 9.6 11.7 (73) def by Yarrawonga 2.3 3.5 8.6 13.8 (86)
Yarrawonga’s Under 18s have made it three wins from three to open the 2026 season, but not without being tested in a tough contest against Lavington.
In a match that demanded a four-quarter effort, coaches Wilson and Frauenfelder challenged their young side to lift — and the response came when it mattered most.
Lavington controlled large portions of the game and appeared to have the measure of the Pigeons, but were unable to put the contest beyond doubt. Yarrawonga capitalised in a powerful final term, surging late to claim what could prove a defining win for the group against another strong junior outfit.
Charlie Hargreaves made an immediate impact in his first game of the season, while captain Archie Jaques led from the front with two crucial goals. Up forward, Jai Sneddon and Samuel Trembath provided valuable contributions, converting their opportunities to help seal the result.
The unbeaten start now sets up an intriguing clash following the bye, with Wangaratta Magpies looming as a significant benchmark for the young Pigeons.
