The committee advises both the MDBA and the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council on issues such as water resources, the environment, Indigenous water rights and the socio-economic wellbeing of basin communities.
The Murray-Darling Basin is home to 2.4 million Australians.
MDBA chief executive Andrew McConville said diverse representation was essential to the committee’s work.
“We are looking for people who are engaged with their community and have a genuine interest in water resource, environmental, cultural and socio-economic matters relevant to the basin,” Mr McConville said.
With the basin plan currently under review, Mr McConville said the committee’s role remained critical even as the public consultation period has closed.
“We are in an important phase of reviewing the basin plan, and although the public consultation process has closed, the Basin Community Committee continues to engage with the MDBA on policy reform and achieving a more outcomes focused basin plan into the next decade,” he said.
“I want to thank current members and acknowledge the significant contribution they’ve made to get us to where we are today.”
Established under the Water Act 2007, the committee is chaired by Rachel Kelly and includes irrigation, environmental water and Indigenous water subcommittees.
New tenures begin in April 2027 for a three-year term, with all basin governments involved in the selection process.
Nominations close at 11.30pm on Sunday, June 21.
