President Susan Ingleton said it had been a difficult year, but with the beginning of term three, and the slow reduction of Covid-19 restrictions, NEMA is pleased to announce the re-commencement of free English lessons.
“The lessons will normally be held each week on Monday evening at 6 pm in Benalla Library,” Ms Ingleton said.

“Lessons were scheduled to recommence on Monday, July 13, however, due to current restrictions and the library not being available, it appears that the lessons will need to continue via zoom for a few more weeks.”
For more information on these lessons, phone the Cultural Cottage on 5721 2090.
“Everyone who needs help with reading, writing, speaking or understanding English, is welcome to attend,” Ms Ingleton said.
“If you have recently arrived, or if you have been here for a while, but feel you have had limited opportunity to learn English; or if you are beginning to forget what you have previously learnt, then you are very welcome to join us.
Jan takes reigns – new Rotary President announced
“The welcome dinner for all culturally and linguistically diverse people who have recently arrived in Benalla Rural City, planned for Saturday, July 11, has been postponed, for at least a month.
“Please be aware we are very keen to hold the welcome dinner, but we must continue to maintain social distancing and comply with current COVID-19 regulations.”
Ms Ingleton said the popular Phone-a-Friend service would continue to operate.
“If you or someone you know would like a phone-friend, to speak in your own language, phone the Cultural Cottage 5721 2090 and we will find some one who speaks your language,” Ms Ingleton said.

“With a phone-a-friend, you can talk about moving to a new country, what it is like to leave your country of birth, how difficult it is to learn a new language, and the joys, as well as the difficulties of making Australia your home.
“Our Advocacy Program will also continue. Anyone who is struggling to understand, or deal with a situation can ring the Cultural Cottage on 5721 2090 and we will assist or refer you to an appropriate government department, health, legal or educational facility.”
The Cultural Cottage is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at number 3 The Cl in Wangaratta if you would like to pop in for a chat.
