Benalla well represented at the Hopman Cup

Murphy said the team evolved after several weeks of searching throughout the extensive squash network.

“Not able to get enough players from Benalla other than local squash player Dave Campbell, I began searching further afield,” he said.

“The team ended up consisting of two players from Wodonga, two from Yarrawonga, one from Geelong and even one from Hobart.”

Competing against other quality teams the team finished second in Division 3 of the event.

The event is named after Sir Harry Hopman who is best known for his tennis. He also played squash and won what was known then as the Centenary Cup as the Australian Squash Champion in 1934. He later donated the Cup to Victorian Country Squash in the early 1970s before the first Country Squash Championship was played in 1973.

With the event not being able to be played last year, squashies were keen, relieved and very happy to have the event back this year for the 47th time.
