In the coming months, Benalla Art Gallery is presenting a range of Art on Saturdays workshops designed to ignite creativity, allowing participants to explore different mediums to create individual, unique art works.
These workshops will be hosted at the Pop-Up Benalla Art Gallery, 75 Bridge St East.
The term three Art on Saturdays program starts with a fun, beginner-friendly earring-making workshop with Sue Plumb.
Using traditional jewellery-making tools and techniques, attendees will create their own simple earrings from a selection of materials, including silver.
Ms Plumb is a jewellery designer and experienced teacher who has taught VCE, IB and TAFE Certificate IV in Design.
From her Blue Range Studio near Mansfield, she creates bespoke jewellery and leads classes.
Earring-Making with Sue Plumb will be held from 10am to 2pm, on Saturday, July 25. All materials will be supplied.
The cost of this workshop is $70 for members, or $80 for non-members.
In another workshop, keen drawers will be able to learn directly from Karen Brown, exploring the possibilities of coloured pencils.
This is a technique-based workshop suitable for beginner and intermediate coloured pencil artists who want to improve their current skill level.
Using elements from nature and a hands-on approach, Karen will take you through the techniques she uses to produce her realistic colour drawings.
Sharing her tips and skills, you will develop the beginnings of your own reference guide to assist with your coloured pencil drawings, including colour selection, blending, layering, mark making and more.
Discussions will also include ways to begin a drawing, differences in paper and how to analyse your own progress.
Ms Brown is an Albury-based artist whose work is inspired by the natural environment along the Murray River.
Her highly detailed drawings encourage viewers to notice the fine textures and tiny details in everyday natural and man-made objects.
A resident artist at Art Gallery on Ovens in Wangaratta, Karen’s work is held in public and private collections.
She recently won an award at the King Valley Art Show for her graphite drawing Winter.
The Coloured Pencil Workshop with Karen Brown will be held from 10am to 4.30pm, on Saturday, August 8. All materials will be supplied.
The cost of this workshop is $120 for members or $130 for non-members.
The final Art on Saturdays term three workshops are a multi-part exploration of portrait drawing, tone and colour with Janet Leith.
Be inspired by portraiture and learn how artists such as entrants in the Archibald Prize and ABC’s Portrait Artist of the Year create their realistic images.
During these two workshops, attendees will be guided through techniques and skills to create an accurate self-portrait or a portrait of a family member or friend.
In the first workshop, participants will be introduced to the grid technique of drawing and shown step-by-step how this enables artists to accurately copy and enlarge an image for drawing onto heavy paper.
During the second workshop, attendees will delve into the detail of the portrait as they explore drawing techniques using pencils and pastels.
This will give participants the ability to create various skin tones that will bring a face to life.
Whether a beginner or experienced artist, these workshops will develop insights and understanding of portraiture and enrich the artist’s confidence in developing portraits of their own.
Ms Leith is a contemporary visual artist and art educator based in north-east Victoria.
Primarily a figurative and portrait artist, she is also inspired by her natural environment and the presence of the figure within.
Her work regularly focuses on capturing a moment in time and place as she explores movement, mood and colour while studying the human condition.
Portrait Drawing – Tone and Colour with Janet Leith will be held from 10am to 2pm across two Saturdays, on August 22 and 29. All materials will be supplied.
The cost of these workshop is $120 for members or $130 for non-members.
Benalla Art Gallery director Eric Nash said the workshops offered at Benalla Art Gallery were an opportunity for participants to experiment with various creative mediums, while learning from and working alongside professional artists, gaining an insight into their individual creative practices.
“It is no secret that we have an incredible community of artists here in the north-east who are regularly making and presenting work in many of our great spaces,” he said.
“Our comprehensive program of workshops is all about supporting a direct experience and a deeper understanding of making and thinking about art, while also piquing the interest of members of the community seeking a new hobby, through an engagement with leading artists.”
To take part in one or more of these workshops, booking is essential.
