Shire’s only landfill has life extended

A collection truck tips kerbside landfill waste into the new Cell 10, which began receiving waste on 19 June 2026.

A major project to prolong the life of the Cobram Landfill has been approved by Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA).

Capacity has been reached at the facility and a new waste cell opened last month, designed to provide another 2.5 to three years of waste disposal, in line with EPA’s Best Practice Environmental Management (BPEM) guidelines.

In September 2025, Goldsmith Civil and Environmental was awarded the almost $3 million contract to build the new Cell 10 and undertake final capping works.

A specialised waste compactor works the first disposal area in the new cell. Waste placement within the landfill follows a carefully engineered plan to maximise capacity and ensure environmental compliance.

Work is almost complete on the capping of Cells four to eight using compost from Western Composting, which processes Moira Shire’s green organics bin waste.

This approach closes the loop on the region’s organic waste, with material collected from households returning to the site as part of its rehabilitation.

Moira Shire Council chair administrator, Dr Graeme Emonson said the new cell would ensure continued capacity to dispose of municipal and commercial waste, while the capping of the older cells ensured compliance with environmental protection standards.

“There are stringent environmental regulations behind the construction and management of landfills that must be met, and Council is fulfilling these obligations,” Dr Emonson said.

The Cobram Landfill is the only landfill in Moira Shire.
