FFMVic chief fire officer Chris Hardman said seasonal recruits would train and work alongside permanent firefighters, joining a workforce of close to 1800 front-line personnel and 1200 accredited incident management staff this season.
“These are fantastic jobs doing practical work, right at the front line of protecting communities and the environment,” Mr Hardman said.
FFMVic crews responded to more than 900 bushfires across Victoria last summer and carried out priority planned burns aimed at reducing the impact of future fires.
Beyond firefighting and planned burns, seasonal staff also carry out pest and weed control, and maintain recreational reserves, fuel breaks and forest roads, work that Mr Hardman said offered a rewarding path for people with a passion for the outdoors.
“We want our crews to reflect the communities they serve and to have a range of skills and experiences,” he said, adding that some positions are designated for First Nations employment.
Seasonal employment runs from October to May, with start and end dates varying by location.
