The Wangaratta District Cricket Association canceled all its junior and senior matches, including those of Benalla Bushrangers, in response to the expected heatwave.
The WDCA met at 5 pm Friday night, with the Adverse Weather Sub Committee considering forecast conditions for Saturday’s matches scheduled in line with the association’s extreme heat policy.

The guidelines state: “If the temperature for Wangaratta is forecast to be over 40 degrees, the Extreme Weather Committee shall be responsible for making a decision regarding cancellation of play.”
Due to a forecast temperature of 43 degrees in Wangaratta, all scheduled matches were canceled.
With several of Benalla’s teams set to contest the second day of two-day matches, the reprieve meant all games, including Bushrangers’ A-grade round-10 clash against top-of-the-table Yarrawonga Mulwala, resulted in a draw.

Sunday’s more palatable weather meant the Bushrangers’ Over 60s match at Benalla Gardens still went ahead, with the home side victorious over Sunbury/Macedon Ranges.
Batting first, Sunbury went on to make 178 with Benalla’s Greg Hoysted (3-17) on fire in attack, while Peter Neville and Graham Squires also snared two wickets apiece.
Switching to the pine, Benalla chased down Sunbury’s score in 32 overs with five wickets in hand, with Ian Dinsdale the best with 33.
Rounding out the line-up, Steven Siggers, Hoysted and Squires all reached 32 before retiring.

Round 10 of the Benalla and District Summer tennis season was also abandoned on Saturday, as well as the local junior competition.
Across the three senior divisions, all games were scheduled to be played in Euroa, but the high heats will also see these matches marked as draws.
Local cricket and tennis will resume this Saturday, with the Benalla Bushrangers A-grade side set to kick off a two-day battle with Wangaratta Magpies at the Gardens.
On the courts, the Lawn Tennis Club will have a home-court advantage in their division one match, while the Lawn and Gardens Clubs division two and three sides respectively will travel to Avenel.
