The Hoppers were amongst it early, but Mathoura was more efficient with the ball across half-forward.
Rennie snagged goals through Woodhouse and McGillivray in the first quarter but trailed by nine points at the first break.
Things clicked for the Hoppers during the second term as they began winning clearances through Lewie Taylor and Woodhouse.
Will Taylor was an animal in defence, licking his lips at every opportunity to take on an opponent.
Kirchen kicked two goals for the quarter, while Bruce, Marcus Hargreaves, Basil Lewis and Lewie Taylor also hit the scoreboard to give the Hoppers a 16-point advantage at the long break.
The third term was an arm wrestle, with Mathoura sensing an opportunity, but goals to coach Conner and captain Denver allowed the Hoppers to maintain a 13-point lead at the final break.
It was a mighty struggle during the final term as Mathoura peppered the goals but managed only one goal from six attempts, reducing the margin to two points before Lewie Taylor responded with a goal.
Mathoura replied within a minute, meaning the Hoppers needed to lift.
The team was led by Bassett at half-back, who proved impassable, while another goal from Bruce eased the pressure on the Hoppers.
Mathoura again responded within a minute and brought the margin back to less than a goal.
However, the Hoppers were not to be denied.
A gut-busting run from Kirchen ended with him lacing out coach Conner, who kicked the sealer late in the contest.
It was a well-deserved victory for the Hoppers, who battled hard until the end.

The Hoppers’ reserves started indifferently and found themselves a couple of goals behind early.
Youngsters Lyons and Hodgson showed up their more seasoned teammates with their poise and effort, while coach Stevo did the scoring up forward.
The Hoppers dragged the game back to level at half-time and were held together by Truey and Tully across half-back.
However, the visitors were able to establish an eight-point advantage before running away with a 25-point victory.
Stevenson was the shining light up forward with four goals.

An indifferent second term proved to be the Hoppers’ downfall as they went down by 14 points.
Rennie trailed by one point at the first break before Mathoura stretched its lead to 29 points by half-time.
However, a superb third term saw the Hoppers kick five goals to one and reduce the margin to four points at the final break.
The Hoppers were valiant, but the visitors had one particularly savvy player who kicked six goals and proved to be the difference.
It was great to have swimming gun Fraser Nagle back in the green and white, and he provided a strong target up forward with three goals.
He was well supported by Knighter and Hemp.

The young Hoppers came up against a severely undermanned opponent and recorded a 247-point victory.
The result was the Hoppers’ largest victory in any grade in the Pdfnl and marked the first time one of their teams had kicked 40 goals.
The Hoppers had 13 goalkickers, including nine multiple goalkickers.
Huddo Crawford and Hunter Lewis provided highlights by each kicking four goals in a quarter, while Ollie Legudi also hit the scoreboard.
It was a superb effort from the little Timbercutters, who kept cracking in against a bigger opponent.
