Dawes and Vary Riordan Lawyers will run sessions at Tongala, Echuca, Kyabram, Rushworth and Rochester libraries from May 19 to May 22 to help residents understand the importance of proper estate planning.
Lawyer Holly Crump emphasised the firm's commitment to making legal information accessible to the community.
“The first thing we normally talk about in our law week sessions is that it is really important for Dawes and Vary Riordan to be involved in these Law Week sessions each year, because it is really important to us to make sure that legal information is accessible to the community in a really straight-forward way,” she said.
“The main thing we talk about in these sessions is obviously people putting a will in place to cover off their personal and financial powers of attorney, as well as appointments of medical treatment decision-maker and advanced care directive.”
She addressed common hesitations about estate planning.
“One of the main questions we get is, ‘Why should I bother thinking about this now? I am young, I’m fit and healthy, I haven’t lost my marbles, and my assets are straightforward enough,’” she said.
“Even though it is not much fun to think about these topics, the whole purpose of this is to make sure that our clients can stay in control of their decisions for as long as they can, and if they can’t, that they have got the people they trust in charge of making decisions for them.”
These free sessions run by Dawes and Vary Riordan Lawyers are in conjunction with the Campaspe Shire Council.
