He will share insights from his acclaimed work ‘I’ll Walk Beside You’, a powerful exploration of Australian wartime history.
Drawing on letters, diaries and official records, Mitchell traces the journey of the 2/2 Pioneer Battalion from the fall of Java through captivity in Batavia and the brutal conditions of the Burma-Thai Railway.
His work highlights the endurance, humour and mateship that carried ordinary Australians through extraordinary hardship.
Benalla Mayor, Bernie Hearn, said the event offers the community a meaningful opportunity to connect with an important chapter of Australia’s past.
“Peter Mitchell’s work brings to life the deeply human stories behind our wartime history,” Cr Hearn said.
“This talk will resonate with anyone interested in resilience, family history or the lived experiences of Australians who faced unimaginable challenges with courage and compassion.”
Shaped by Mr Mitchell’s decades living and working across Southeast Asia, the talk provides fresh insight into the experiences of Australians caught in extraordinary circumstances.
It will appeal to readers of military history, family history researchers and community members interested in stories of strength and the human spirit.
The talk takes place at Benalla Library on Wednesday, June 24 from 5.30pm - 6.30pm.
Entry is free, but community members are encouraged to reserve their place early.
