It is also a day to say thank you.
Wear Orange Wednesday has been held each year since 2002. In Benalla, volunteers park one of its rescue trucks outside BWS, on Arundel St, and tin rattle.
Benalla SES member Graham Milner said he wanted to say thank you to everyone who donated on Wednesday, to BWS for supporting the day, and to the owners of the Royal Hotel who allowed them to tin rattle inside the popular pub.
Members were outside BWS from around 4.30pm on Wednesday, May 22 and will be back on Friday, May 24 from 3.30pm - 7pm.
Those who were unable to pop past and donate on Wednesday can head over on Friday and show their support.
“Wear Orange Wednesday is a day set aside to appreciate the operations of the State Emergency Services,” Mr Milner said.
“We brought our general rescue truck with chainsaws and all our ropes and equipment on board, all ready to go at two minutes notice.
“So we can show people all the things we do, which can include clearing fallen trees or attending accidents on the road.”
SES is always keen to welcome new members and Mr Milner said there is a wide variety of positions available.
“The best way to apply, or find out more, is online (www.ses.vic.gov.au/join-us/volunteer).
“The other option is on our training night, every Wednesday, turn up at our shed at 1 Samaria Rd at 7.30pm, and you’ll be more than welcome.
“You won’t have to attend all types of incidents. There are people who don’t like attending things like road crashes.
“There’s others who don’t like climbing on rooves, and we cater for everyone.
“We need people who can help out with the administration or answering phones.
“So everyone is welcome to apply.”
