While the poppies and donation tins were out on April 25, Benalla’s Anne Cresswell found another way to pay respect to the diggers on Anzac Day.
Strapping onto her indoor rowing machine, Cresswell covered 30,048 kilometres in blocks of 4 x 2504 metres throughout the day.
The number 2504 was particularly significant, being the date of the landing at Gallipoli on April 25.
Thousands of rowing enthusiasts in Australia and New Zealand vied for the Colvan Cup, with Australians notching up over half of the total 2.052million kilometres, with a total of $5000 going to the RSL in each country.
Cresswell’s donation was then matched by Rowing Australia and Concept2and the benefactor of the interDominion cup.
“It was a pleasant way of remembering Anzac Day,” Cresswell said.
“I believe my verified total distance, equivalent to a full marathon plus a half marathon, was the furthest rowed by an 80+years lightweight woman that day.”
Cresswell said she would be pleased to hear from other rowers interested in forming a north-east Victoria/Goulburn Valley team effort for next year’s event.
“It’s a very worthy cause and a safe way of keeping fit,” she said.
