After a four-round drought in the Big V, the fifth spelled success as both the men’s and women’s sides broke their duck with resounding wins over on Sunday.
Tony Long’s Lady Bushrangers were up first, heating up the hardwood at AWA Alliance Bank Stadium to fly to a 76-59 result over Corio Bay Stingrays.
A fourth-quarter blitz was monumental, as the visitors outscored Corio Bay by 13-points in the last to soar to a win.
“I thought the girls played really well, a few things we’ve been working on came together on Sunday,” Long said.
“It was a great team effort . . . and for us to score almost 80 points is outstanding.”
The Lady Bushrangers led at every change and were clinical in the offensive department.
Tara Blair stole the show with 21points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, while Tahlia Higgs followed closely with 19 points.
Charlotte Balzer also chimed in with 15points, four assists and five rebounds in the triumph.
“Alex (Trezise) was excellent with her control as a two-point guard, and Tara did a great job scoring and assisting,” Long said.
“Tahlia contributed with a good offensive effort and Charlotte came to play, but it wasn’t just those girls – everyone showed up on Sunday.
“We are realistic with our view and are coming at it from all points of the compass, but we’ve improved on scoring margins each week, so hopefully we can keep that going.”
Victory was just as sweet for Hayden Annett’s Bushrangers.
Winless before the weekend, the Bushies outmuscled Pakenham Warriors 95-81 on its home court to clinch its first win of the campaign.
Individual statistics were not available for the men at the time of print, however, the win now means Annett's troops have a platform to build on heading into Saturday's clash with Altona.
The Lady Bushrangers also take on Altona, with both games to be played at Wangaratta Indoor Sports Centre.
